TRAINING KALEIDOSCOPE

Epsom        Sat 27 Apr

A total of 21 members attended a multi-choice training event at Bracken Ave. The Training event was held at the back lawn of David's home. (1.30-5.00pm with an afternoon tea break.)  A modular programme was designed to provide choices. Two or Three sessions were held simultaneously. We enjoyed sunshine at the start of the afternoon, and used outdoor chairs for seating.

1. How to erect and pack down the Tent Fly and the Zeus tent was guided by Paul and Murray.
2. How to light the Coleman and MSR stoves (3 sessions) was demonstrated by David W and Murray.
3. Calculating costs for a weekend tramp was explained by Barbara. Included Petrol, Accommodation/huts, Food, Equipment Levies.
4. Paul used scenarios to ask his group consider which was the appropriate Track Grade for each. Discussed whIch factors determine Hard, Medium or Easy rating on tramps.
5. Barbara showed how to prepare a Day Pack with essential items.
6. Navigation using the Topo GPS App was a popular choice with two sessions by Bryan.  Good to have those who had loaded the App to be able to trial planning a route.
7. Leader's advice for leading a tramp, and catering for the needs of the group was explained by Paul.
8. Ruth demonstrated how to use a Dehydrator to dehydrate food for tramps. Also shared some different ideas for tramping lunches.
9. Weather Research was helpfully explained by Bryan. Great websites shared. Even how to read the clouds you see from your location.
10. Reading a hard copy Topo map, and identifying the features on the track, was discussed with Paul and Murray.

Thanks to David and Jill for hosting us, and providing afternoon tea, and extra seating. We were thankful to God for the fine weather!
