KAURI GLEN TREETOPS

Birkenhead             Sun 14 Jul

The Sunday afternoon walk started from Little Shoal Bay and crossed the foreshore reserve into Le Roy's Bush along a gravel path and boardwalk. The  Valley Rd access path was on the right and the road led to the busy Onewa Rd. We walked up the road a little way to a controlled school crossing and walked down Kauri Glen Rd past Northcote College.

The Kauri Glen Reserve was on the right and we entered the bush along a very high grade track and it was short walk to the new viaduct bridge across the deep valley. We had great views of the native tree canopy including majestic Kauri.

We continued along the track to T?? Glen Rd and turned left into City View Rd to access a pathway at the road end which took us up to Birkenhead Avenue. From there we crossed over and walked down Recreation Drive and turned left to access a wide concrete path which took us through the Birkenhead War Memorial Park. We then walked up Mahara Avenue to Mokoia Rd and crossed over to Colonial Rd and walked down a steep hill to the old brick cottages in Chelsea Park. Turning left, we went along a grassy area which gave us views down to the Sugar Factory and ponds.  Veering right toward some pines and bush we found a track which led up to Rawene Rd which took us up to the Highbury shops. We walked down Hinemoa Street to some cafes, crossed over into Glade Place and accessed a track back into Le Roy's Bush and back to Little Shoal Bay. The forecast rain was about start so folk quickly headed off home.

The large group was split into 2 groups. The first group was led by Alan and Joy Milne. The 2nd group was led by Ted Owens and did the walk in reverse order in a clockwise direction.
